Sadia Malik, MD, is a board-certified family medicine physician who sees patients of all ages at the ETMC First Physicians clinic at Three Lakes in Tyler.
“I think the most important thing is just listening to the patient. You might notice something that could change their whole medical treatment.”
For example, a patient who is often indoors might have a vitamin D deficiency, she said, while other clues might lead her to check for elevated blood pressure or cholesterol. Staying informed of a patient’s current condition might help avoid a stroke or heart attack 10 years from now.
Although born in the U.S., Dr. Malik spent time growing up in Pakistan, where her parents are from. She speaks English, Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and a little Spanish, helping her communicate with a wider range of patients.
“I try to put myself in their place. I like to explain why we’re doing things, even if it’s just a simple test.”
