ETMC Henderson heart attack program recognized as international center of excellence

January 20, 2016

ETMC Henderson has been named a center of excellence by the Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication (SHAPE,, for its heart attack prevention program, one of only 50 such centers in seven countries worldwide.

ETMC Henderson initiated a CT calcium scoring program to identify patients who are at increased risk of having a heart attack, stroke or sudden cardiac death. A cardiac calcium CT scoring test indicates the buildup of plaque on the walls of the coronary arteries. If plaque is present, the patient may need anything from changes in diet and exercise, to a stress test or referral to a cardiologist for treatment.

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 787,000 people in the U.S. died from heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases in 2011. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one third of these deaths are preventable by treatment of identified risk factors.

SHAPE is developing a network of hospitals and clinics that have adopted standardized screening protocols with the goal of improving patient outcomes through early detection and prevention of coronary artery disease.
