ETMC Cancer Institute in Tyler unveils revolutionary radiation treatment system

December 1, 2017

The ETMC Cancer Institute in Tyler unveiled this week a new state-of-the-art radiation technology, the Elekta Versa HD, to treat a broad spectrum of tumors throughout the body, while enabling treatment of highly complex cancers that require extreme targeting precision.

“Versa HD uses the latest advances in technology to enable sophisticated approaches to challenging cases,” said Dr. Carlo Demandante, board-certified radiation oncologist with the ETMC Cancer Institute. “This new linear accelerator provides superior conformance to tumor size, shape and volume, allowing us to administer higher dose rates that can enhance treatment effectiveness while protecting critical structures such as the heart, spine or bladder.

Another benefit is shorter treatment times. “Shorter treatment times improve patient comfort, but also reduce inaccuracies resulting from patient movement during treatment delivery,” added Dr. Demandante. “Softer streamlined shapes and ergonomic features combine with low mechanical noise and ambient lighting effects help create a confident and relaxed patient treatment environment.”

The Versa also delivers ultra-low doses of radiation making it safer for the patient. “The new accelerator is better for patient positioning, which is important where high precision is necessary for certain procedures,” said Dr. Demandante.

Radiation therapy provides techniques for destroying abnormal cells. In many instances, radiation therapy is the single best method for the treatment and cure of cancer.

The ETMC Cancer Institute has the area’s only Cyberknife and also treats cancer with the Varian TrueBeam and other technology. ETMC began offering cancer services in Tyler in 1982 and in Athens in 2009.
