Patient advocates

ETMC Tyler provides the services of patient advocates to help create the most friendly and patient-centered experience possible.


Our patient advocates rounds daily on patients and family members and visits with them about how well the hospital is meeting their personal service needs. The advocates listens to patients, solves service issues they may be having and provides an empathetic viewpoint. Patients can feel comfortable asking the advocates for help with any service issues.

The advocates cannot address clinical concerns, but they are glad to facilitate meetings between patients and the appropriate clinical team members.

Jessica Barkell finds her guest encounters to be very rewarding.

“I love getting to visit with our patients and their families. Knowing that I may have been able to help them or to work with another team member to improve a patient’s day, well, that really makes my day!”


Carola Erwin is a familiar face at ETMC, having spent the past 31 years in food services and nutrition. She and Jessica meet daily with patients to ensure they have a good experience while in the hospital. Erwin says she’s excited to be able to positively impact patients in her new role. “I believe the greatest gift you can give anyone is the gift of love and service,” said Erwin. “I know that ETMC is the best place to work as I am given the opportunity everyday to serve and share my unconditional love with others, which truly brings joy to my heart.”
