ETMC Medical Weight Management

Integrating exercise, diet and clinical oversight

ETMC Medical Weight Management is an evidence-based, outcomes-focused program designed to help participants achieve and maintain a healthy weight and improved quality of life. The program integrates healthy eating, exercise and behavior modification to assist them as they lose weight and learn to live a healthy lifestyle. Other tools, such as medication or meal replacement options, may be utilized depending on individual needs.

Program oversight is provided by medical director Katie Root, MD, FACP, who is board-certified in internal medicine and is an obesity medicine specialist. She heads a multidisciplinary team that includes a dietitian and fitness specialists, who work together to create a plan customized to meet your health and weight-loss needs.

Patient benefits of ETMC Medical Weight Management

ETMC Medical Weight Management is not like other weight-loss programs in the area. Our focus is not just on losing weight. We want our participants to lose weight and keep it off by learning to eat a healthy diet and by integrating physical activity into their daily lives. Our ultimate goal is improved health and well-being for our participants.

In addition, our program was created to help East Texans avoid the health complications that can result from obesity, such as

  • heart disease and stroke
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • some cancers
  • gallbladder disease and gallstones
  • osteoarthritis
  • gout
  • some breathing problems, such as sleep apnea and asthma

Medical qualifications of the leaders set this program apart

Through her practice as an internist with ETMC First Physicians in Tyler, Dr. Root saw the need to gain additional expertise in treating obesity – a growing problem among her patients. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and a member of The Obesity Society and the Obesity Medicine Association. Under her leadership, ETMC Medical Weight Management was created. Dr. Root is well-trained in modern medication treatments that may be an option for some patients. She also investigates for possible causes and complications of obesity, and works with the patient’s primary care providers to optimize the medical care and weight-loss efforts.

“I started seeing several patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and a lot of other conditions that stemmed from obesity. Several patients were asking me how to lose weight, what to do with their diet and, to be honest, I didn’t know what to tell them. That’s when I discovered the field of obesity medicine. I decided I wanted to help these patients, and I set out to become an expert in obesity diagnosis and treatment.”
– Katie Root, MD, FACP, ETMC Medical Weight Management director

Misti Odefey, MS, RD, dietitian for ETMC Medical Weight Management, has 17 years of experience as a registered dietitian. She holds a master’s degree in nutrition from Texas A&M University and a bachelor of science in dietetics from Baylor University.

“As a working mom of three, I understand that healthy eating must be practical and realistic. My goal is to provide achievable goals for people with busy schedules in order to reach a weight that will decrease health risks and improve quality of life. I believe that your diet does not have to be perfect to achieve results.”

More on ETMC Olympic Centers

Under the leadership of Hinojosa, ETMC’s network of 10 ETMC Olympic Centers has earned a widespread reputation for high standards in the field of medical fitness. The facilities operate under the philosophy that “exercise is medicine.” This is a movement whereby medically integrated health and fitness centers put an emphasis on physician oversight, clinical integration, safety, cleanliness and highly trained staff thereby making exercise and physical activity part of the healthcare continuum.

Full-time staff members at the ETMC Olympic Center receive four-year degrees in exercise science or a related field, hold a nationally accredited fitness certification and earn the Exercise is Medicine Credential from the American College of Sports Medicine.

Hinojosa believes the ETMC Medical Weight Management program offers the advantage of being among the most comprehensive programs in the country combining clinical, dietary and exercise components that will effectively address behavioral modifications necessary for patients to lose weight and keep it off.

“The aspect of the program I’m most excited about is the integration. So many existing weight-loss programs focus on only one of the many factors associated with effective weight management, while ignoring or failing to appropriately address other factors. This program will address the entire spectrum of challenges that most people face when trying to lose weight. They’ll have a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers at their disposal.”
– Jeramie Hinojosa, ETMC Olympic Centers director
