ETMC Cancer Institute in Athens

Life shouldn’t revolve around your cancer treatment

Even the best cancer treatment can disrupt your life. At the ETMC Athens Cancer Institute, we understand. So we provide the same state-of-the-art care that’s available in larger cities, only close to home so you don’t have to spend hours on the road.

We fight cancer with all the weapons of an accredited program that follows National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines and protocols. We have high standards of care, but it is our caring that sets us apart. As members of the same community, we feel an extra commitment to giving you personalized treatment that revolves around your life – and your quality of life.

“We were first in the region to become accredited through the American College of Surgeons (Commission on Cancer). As a part of that, we do ongoing quality studies and peer review. I think this leads to a better program and has a positive impact on patients’ outcomes.”
– Regina Davis, MHA, director of the ETMC Cancer Institute

We gang up on your cancer

Regularly scheduled treatment planning conferences bring together a roomful of specialists (medical oncologists, pathologists, surgeons, radiologists and radiation oncologists) to develop a comprehensive, personalized treatment plan. In this way, you benefit from getting many doctors’ opinions in one setting.

We use genetic testing to target your treatment

The genetic makeup of your tumor can reveal specific mutations that allowed it to grow, giving us the ability to provide targeted treatments just for those mutations. And we invest in leading-edge technology that attacks tumors with submillimeter accuracy – without attacking you.

In addition, genetic testing is available for people who are concerned about developing cancer because of a family history of the disease. One of the most common examples is testing for BRCA gene mutation. Short for BReast CAncer, BRCA gene mutations also are an indicator for ovarian cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.

If you have a family history of cancer, genetic testing through ETMC can identify your risk for developing cancer and help you determine the best course of action. For information please call 903-531-8890 or 1-866-333-3862.

We use the most advanced technology

A recent addition to the ETMC Cancer Institute in Athens, the Elekta Infinity linear accelerator uses volumetric arc therapy (VMAT), a major advancement in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment. Compared to conventional IMRT, VMAT increases the ability to target tumors while minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissues and reduces treatment time from approximately 19 minutes to five minutes or less.

Radiation therapy, in many cases, is the single best method for the treatment and cure of cancer. The Elekta Infinity accelerator elevates the level of treatment we can provide for the people of Henderson County and furthers our mission of improving your quality of life through the art of medicine.

“Shorter treatment time improves patient comfort, while also reducing the inaccuracy that results from patient movement during treatment delivery.”
– Bruce Ellerin, MD, board-certified radiation oncologist

We do the navigating for you

Our compassionate team of certified radiation specialists includes a nurse who helps coordinate every step of your care, so you can spend less time making appointments and more time living life. Also here for you is our office manager, who is an expert in insurance and financial assistance.

We respect your time

We try to avoid big gaps between scheduled treatments and appointments, even if that means reshuffling our schedule to accommodate yours. And we try to take as much waiting out of the waiting room as possible.

We never stop caring

Even when your course of treatment is completed, we stay involved by helping you create a personalized survivorship plan. This includes reviewing the impact of your cancer diagnosis on all aspects of your life; ensuring you have the support necessary to manage stress and enjoy a healthy recovery; making recommendations for future cancer screenings; and providing a list of support resources.

You are at the center of everything we do

We do all of this not only to maintain our position as the first cancer program in East Texas to receive approval from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. We do it because, after all these years, it’s still true: We treat cancer. We care for people.
