Trauma care for our region

Regional Trauma Centers

ETMC provides emergency care across our region with our network of trauma centers.

Level I Trauma Center
The hub of the ETMC Regional Trauma System trauma care network is ETMC Tyler, offering the first and only Level I trauma center in East Texas. That designation means that ETMC Tyler's trauma center is equipped with highly advanced technology and staffed by a dedicated research team to ensure the most current methods of care. ETMC Tyler is also the only

Air 1 Team

trauma center in East Texas with board-certified trauma surgeons on-site around the clock.

ETMC EMS Ambulance service
The ETMC Regional Trauma System has also established one of the most progressive ambulance providers in the nation - ETMC Emergency Medical Service. ETMC EMS covers 16,000 square miles and serves 20 East Texas counties with the largest rural not-for-profit ambulance service in Texas. To assist in dispatching care throughout its service area, ETMC EMS has created a state-of-the-art communications center using satellite global positioning to track the precise location of its ground units at all times. An EMS membership program offers peace of mind from out-of-pocket ambulance expense for a low annual cost.

The ETMC Regional Trauma System has also established a fleet of Air 1 emergency helicopters to serve East Texans. Air 1 is the first air medical service to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Air Medical Transport Services.

Trauma Centers at our regional hospitals have been designated Level III or Level IV by the Texas Department of State Health Services

We completed a rigorous process to qualify for these rankings. What that means to our communities is that they are assured quality care at a time they need it most.

Level III Centers
Level III centers include ETMC Athens, ETMC Jacksonville and ETMC Crockett. The designation indicates trauma centers are staffed by physicians and healthcare professionals with advanced trauma training. Level III trauma centers also plan for specialized needs, such as pediatric and burn care. Advance planning, which includes written agreements with the leading referral hospitals, ensures that no delay occurs in the transfer process. As a result, our Level III centers are a seamless part of the state's most advanced trauma systems.

Level IV Centers
Our Level IV centers are prepared for most traumatic injuries with general surgeons available around the clock and and additional, specially trained support staff on hand. Like our Level III centers, agreements for referrals and transfer are in place to prevent delay if a higher level of care is required. Level IV centers include ETMC Carthage, Clarksville, Fairfield, Gilmer, Mt. Vernon, Pittsburg, Quitman and Trinity.
