As an internal medicine physician, Dr. Rick Martinez urges his patients to come in for regular checkups. It helps him get a jump on health problems such as diabetes.
“I feel pretty comfortable helping treat that and getting folks down a pathway of trying to improve their diabetes and improve their diet,” he said.
It goes beyond medical expertise. Having diabetes in his family and being fluent in English and Spanish helps Dr. Martinez understand the disease and explain how to cope with it.
“You can still have a good Hispanic diet if you want,” he said. “Just let it be healthy. Change now so that you can avoid problems later.”
Dr. Martinez moved from Houston to Mineola in 2002. He believes he made the right move.
“The area has really called to me,” Dr. Martinez said. “This is going to be my home for quite a while.”
