Prenatal clinic to open in Gun Barrel City

January 17, 2017

Beginning Jan. 24, ETMC Athens will offer prenatal care in Gun Barrel City for uninsured and/or underinsured women.

Currently, ETMC Athens offers a prenatal clinic in Athens providing free pregnancy tests and low-cost prenatal care. This will be an extension of those services.

“We opened the Athens clinic about 15 years ago when we saw an increasing number of women coming to our emergency department when it was time to deliver. They had not received prenatal care, which put them and their child at greater risk,” said Pat Wallace, administrator of ETMC Athens. “Our goal is to help ensure that as many women as possible get prenatal care, which should reduce the risk of premature deliveries and complications.”

Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner JoAnn Stroud manages the clinic. Several physicians, who practice at ETMC Athens, rotate weekly to see each patient the last three weeks of pregnancy and deliver the babies. They are: Dr. Jon Rich, Dr. Douglas Curran, Dr. Gregory Mondini, Dr. Bruce Woodall, Dr. Michael Swartwood, Dr. Alisha Cleaver and Dr Natalie Hobdy.

Patients that develop complications during their pregnancy will be seen by a physician earlier than the final three weeks. Those requiring more complex prenatal care, such as twins, pre-existing diabetes or hypertension, are transferred to area obstetricians for closer observation.

With a positive pregnancy test, the hospital offers assistance in applying for Medicaid or CHIP coverage for the pregnancy, and in answering questions or dealing with problems with insurance providers. Payment plans can be arranged for patients who do not qualify for insurance coverage. Interpretation services are available for Spanish-speaking patients.

The Gun Barrel City clinic is located in the Lakeland Medical Associates building at 170 Municipal Dr. The clinic will be open on Tuesdays. Call 903-676-5480, for more information.
