Stunning architecture, stellar people
The majestic beauty of ETMC Athens traces its roots to humble beginnings as the Henderson County Memorial Hospital. Created by the 1946 Hill-Burton Act that provided federal grants and guaranteed loans to improve the nation’s healthcare system in the wake of World War II, the hospital served the area well for 35 years.
In the mid 80s, the hospital reached out to other health systems to find a partner who could help the facility improve and stay up-to-date. ETMC was honored to have been selected, and in 1986 we opened a new hospital, which received high praise from the community, as well as numerous architectural awards for its visual appeal.
That was only the beginning. In 2010, we undertook a $32 million construction and renovation project, including a 55,600-square-foot wrap-around expansion and the renovation of an additional 12,000 square feet of existing space. And while our architecture is impressive, it’s the caring hearts of the people inside that are truly the most beautiful parts of ETMC Athens.
Today’s ETMC Athens
We provide Henderson County residents with a host of inpatient and outpatient services. Our 24-hour emergency department is designated a Level IV trauma center by the state of Texas and serves as home base to one of ETMC’s Air 1 helicopters.
We have an impressive array of diagnostics, including a 64-slice CT scanner, MRI, nuclear medicine, digital mammography, ultrasound and X-ray. Our laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists.
We also offer inpatient and outpatient surgery, an intensive care unit and the Family Birthplace.
We recognize the importance of a well-educated, trained healthcare workforce. To that end, the ETMC Education Center in Athens hosts nursing classes for the Trinity Valley Community College’s associate degree in nursing program.
ETMC also provides a variety of other medical programs in Henderson County. ETMC Cedar Creek Lake in Gun Barrel City houses a 24-hour emergency center, internal and family medicine clinic, rehabilitation center and an ETMC Olympic Center serving residents in western Henderson County. ETMC Home Health and ETMC EMS serve all of Henderson County.
The ETMC Cancer Institute operates a facility in Athens providing residents of Henderson County with an option for radiation therapy close to home.
