Hannah Hamilton, a 2014 graduate of Carlisle High School, has
been awarded the Homa W. Boren Nursing Scholarship.
The scholarship is funded through an $865,000 estate gift from
the late Ruby Dean. The gift was received by the Henderson
Memorial Hospital board in 2012 for the purpose of advancing
nursing education in association with ETMC Henderson.
Hamilton plans to attend the University of Texas at Tyler to
complete her bachelor's degree in nursing. Her long-range goal is
to return to Henderson to work as a nurse.
Hamilton was chosen by the Henderson Memorial Hospital Board of
Directors from a pool of applicants as the recipient of the
scholarship based on her scholastic merit, extracurricular
activities and a written essay.
The Boren Nursing Scholarship can be extended each year for its
recipient, meaning that funding could be applied for up to four
years of education. As part of the process, recipients sign letters
of agreement that require them to apply at ETMC Henderson upon
graduation, thus ensuring that both the students and local hospital
benefit from the scholarships.
"We are excited to help Miss Hamilton begin her college and
career path due to this generous scholarship," said Mark Leitner,
ETMC Henderson administrator. "The need for nurses in Texas
continues to grow, making this scholarship important to ETMC
Henderson and the young people it serves."
